Trailer, Release Date, More – Deadline

UPDATE with trailer: Briarcliff Entertainment released the trailer for Gabby Giffords won’t support Down, the next documentary by RBG and Julia directors Betsy West and Julie Cohen.

The feature-length pic is gearing up for a July 15 theatrical release after the distributor acquired it in April following its world premiere at SXSW. CNN Films will air it later this year.

PREVIOUS EXCLUSIVE, April 19: Briarcliff Entertainment has acquired the North American rights to Gabby Giffords won’t support Down, the new documentary from directors Betsy West and Julie Cohen. The distributor plans to open the film nationwide on July 15, and CNN Films plans to air it later in the year.

The doc, which premiered at SXSW last month, is considered an awards season contender, scoring 100% so far on Rotten Tomatoes.

The project tells the story of Giffords, who was seriously injured in an assassination attempt and mass shooting in 2011 when she was a congresswoman in Arizona. During her recovery, she became a leading advocate for gun violence prevention, alongside her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, who was later elected to the Senate. Giffords also promoted understanding of aphasia, a language disorder caused by brain damage.

The film also features interviews with figures such as Barack Obama and includes videos of Giffords in the weeks following the shooting.

Lisa Erspamer is producing the documentary, and CNN Films’ Amy Entelis and Courtney Sexton are executive producers along with West and Cohen. Other EPs include Time Studios’ Ian Orefice and Alexandra Johnes and Storyville Films’ Oren Jacoby.

Gabby Giffords story needs to be seen by as many people as possible and we are honored to partner with the filmmakers, CNN and Time Studios to bring it to audiences around the world.

Cohen and West RBG, about the life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, was nominated for an Academy Award for Documentary Feature in 2019. The filmmakers said that Giffords “Is the worker, slayer of dragons, Hits of the 80s, recumbent bike heroes we all need right now. We can’t wait for audiences to fall in love with her as much as we did.

Erspamer, which secured the project, said that “Working alongside Gabby and Mark to bring their story to fruition has been a labor of love and hope. I couldn’t be more proud to be associated with this entire team and look forward to working with Briarcliff Entertainment to present this film to as many people as possible.

Jhe contract was negotiated by Ortenberg and by CAA Media Finance and UTA on behalf of the filmmakers.
