Beavis and Butthead are getting an upgrade in their character designs in the first trailer for their new movie. The film picks up some time after the events of Beavis and Butt-Head Do America as the two are sentenced by juvenile court to go to space camp in 1998, they mistake a docking simulator for something else and are chosen to join a space shuttle mission. When chaos ensues and Beavis and Butt-Head are left for dead in space, they fall through a black hole and reappear on Earth in the year 2022, having to readapt to their new timeline and encounter alternate versions of themselves.
Mike Judge once again leads the cast of Beavis and Butt-Head make the universe in the titular roles alongside Gary Cole, Chris Diamantopoulos, Nat Faxon, Brian Huskey, Chi McBride, Tig Notaro, Stephen Root, Andrea Savage, Martin Starr and Jimmy O. Yang. The time-traveling nature of the story may prove familiar to fans of ’90s comedies, as the perspective of two mindless characters encountering alternate versions of themselves is similar to that of Bill and Ted face the music, the well-received revival of the film franchise led by Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves. The trailer indicates that Beavis and Butt-Head encounter both a haggard adult version of themselves, which Judge teased with concept art shared earlier this year, and a futuristic alien version of the two, though how they encounter these variants is currently unknown.
One of the biggest points of curiosity is whether Beavis and Butt-Head make the universe will see all the familiar faces from the original series, namely Daria, given that the spin-off centered on Tracee Ellis Ross’ Jodie is in development as a movie. With the film set in the present day, it would seem likely that these would be aged versions of the characters, but with Judge teasing that he and the Beavis and Butthead revival show potentially creating further spinoffs, the door is open for fan-favorite characters to return. Only time will tell when Beavis and Butt-Head make the universe hits Paramount+ with the entire original series on June 23.
