Will Ferrell has joined the star-studded cast of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Step Brothers actor is set to play the CEO of a toy company that may or may not be Mattel, which created the Barbie doll.
The comedian joins Margot Robbie, who has signed on to star as Barbie and produce under her LuckyChap Entertainment banner alongside her producing partner and husband Tom Ackerley. Robbie Brenner and David Heyman are also producing.
The star-studded cast also includes Ryan Gosling as Ken, plus Shang-Chi and Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu, Saturday Night Live’s Kate McKinnon, Sex Education’s Emma Mackey, Tick, Tick… Boom ! star Alexandra Shipp and Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera.
Gerwig, who previously directed Lady Bird and Little Women, directs Barbie from a script she co-wrote with collaborator and frequent partner Noah Baumbach. Production is already underway.
According to a synopsis on IMDb, Barbie tells the story of a doll living in Barbieland who is kicked out for not being perfect enough and embarks on an adventure in the real world.
The Barbie movie will be Ferrell’s first feature film since Netflix comedy Eurovision Song Contest 2020: The Story of Fire Saga. He recently starred opposite Paul Rudd in the Apple TV+ series The Shrink Next Door.
