Remakes, reboots, requels, in any case, it’s exhausting, leaving many people feeling like “there’s nothing original left.” Then there are times when something happens that fully embraces the legacy; it’s flaws and all. In the next Disney+ feature Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers, a hilarious comedy that will feature the beloved 90s animated series starring John Mulaney and Andy Samberg as the infamous chipmunks. And judging by the recently released trailer above, it seems like a love letter to Disney and animation fans, complete with cameos from Roger Rabbit, Aladdin, The Three Little Pigs, Scrooge McDuck, My Little PonyMC Skat Kat from Paula Abdul’s 1989 music video Opposites attract and disastrous CGI chats live from the CATS movie and more.
A throwback 30 years in the making, the live-action/CG hybrid action comedy catches up with former TV stars Disney Afternoon in today’s Los Angeles. Feeling like a Hollywood expose story about the 90s series, it covers everything from NES fandom to stuffed animals to old school phonograph and microphone to a room full of Rescue Rangers merchandise
30 years later, a post-op Dale is now in full CGI mode while the rest of the Rescue Rangers team remains in 2D as they explore a world where many different animated characters mingle with the live population. While respecting the evolution of animation, it also pokes fun at itself because a CGI version of Seth Rogen looks like a Shrek (or maybe it’s Beowulf) mobile game related to that of Robert Zemeckis The Polar Express.
In Tic and Tac: Rescue Rangers, Chip and Dale live among cartoons and humans in today’s Los Angeles, but their lives are much different now. It’s been decades since their hit TV series was canceled, and Chip (voice of Mulaney) succumbed to a life as a suburban servant as an insurance salesman. Dale (voiced by Sandberg), meanwhile, has had CGI surgery and works the nostalgic convention circuit, desperate to relive his glory days. When a former castmate mysteriously disappears, Chip and Dale must mend their broken friendship and once again face off against their detective characters Rescue Rangers to save their friend’s life.
Directed by SNL and the lonely island Akiva Schaffer in the director’s chair, Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers might just be one of the funniest movies of the year and a surprise hit. Will Arnett, Dennis Haysbert, Tim Robinson, Chris Parnell, JK Simmons, Keegan-Michael Key and The simpsons’ Tress MacNeille.
Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers will be released on Disney+ on Friday, May 20. Until then, be sure to catch up on all four seasons on the streamer.
